73% Of All Firefighters Are Not "Real" Firefighters

Read below another reason that this is no time to spend money on a fire engine that the 501 C3 privately owned Middlebury Fire Dept could buy on its own. Maybe with a new , responsible chief SOMETHING could be worked out, but not with the present leadership.

Hey, I thought it was all about the money. Now you say its the Chief.  Well, which is it? What could be worked out with a new Chief that could not be worked out with the present Chief?

The BOS approved the pumper.  The BOF approved the pumper.  There is money available to pay for the apparatus that does not raise taxes.  What’s the problem?  What could Mr. DeAngelis “work out?”

Mr. DeAngelis plays absolutely ZERO role in determining whether the MVFD gets new apparatus outside his NO vote on the referendum, and his attempt to sway other voters not to vote for public safety with his cacophonous rhetoric.

Dayton, Gormley, Cookson and others are "pretend" fireman, guys that

want to strut around with white hats and tee shirts. My father, who was

a REAL city fireman would have laughed at these guys.( ALONG

WITH A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE ).

Mr. Cookson is an honorary member of the MVFD and has never claimed to be a firefighter. He does not have gear, and does not respond to calls. Mr. Cookson was given honorary status through his many generous contributions to the department over the years.

Mr. Gormley and Mr Dayton are both Veteran Firefighters. Mr. Gormley has been a firefighter with the MVFD for over 20 years, and Mr. Dayton a member for a great many years longer.

John Dayton has not been active with the MVFD for several years, but in his early years was extremely active with the Department.  I remember hearing a story that occurred in either the 70s or 80s in which John Dayton was attributed to saving the life of a young driver at a motor vehicle accident.

Mr. DeAngelis’s statement regarding “real city firemen” is disrespectful to every volunteer firefighter. Volunteer firefighters make up over 73% of all firefighters in the USA. I rather doubt Mr. DeAngelis’s father would be laughing at that. On the contrary, I would think he maybe a little disappointed in how his son is treating the very volunteers that are willing to risk their lives for the members of our community.

“When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished.  What he does after that is all in the line of work.”  ~Edward F. Croker - Chief FDNY - 1899 -1911

If the 501 C3 privately owned Middlebury Fire Dept should have to buy it's own fire engine, maybe they could pass the cost along to the consumer. When the garbage man buys a new truck, who really pays for it?
The Fire Dept. should come up with a fee schedual for all calls. That way the Kool-Aid Krowd could shop around the get the price for fire protection. Go ahead, guys, call around for quotes and get back to me...

Excellent idea. Mr. Deangelis can "opt out" of fire prevention and save $72.00 on his taxes.

Ummmm, No, we can save about $500,000 this year for a new truck and god knows how much in years to come.

Hello Folks !! We have 7000 people and average 1 call a day. Not enough for full time work. Sorry.
You want to be a 'firemean' go to a big city .....in fact NYFD is always looking for good men and ladies.
And the Waterbury FD is drooling over the equipment you have. so count your blessings.

Isn't this interesting...

Everyone should go to this link: http://www.ourmoneypit.com/fighter.html

Hey asshole, YOU should be counting your blessings. Your lucky these guys are willing to drag your sorry ass out of a fire.

Also you don't buy equipment because you use it everyday. You buy it for the day you need it. On that day, you may find all those useless red trucks at your home. Sure hope they work.

Thanks to "Loyal Brother" for saving some of Pattie's clippings

Gormley concerned about Middlebury

I have served with Tom Gormley on the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department for 18 years. I was Tom's training officer when he joined and always have been impressed with his dedication and competence.

I, and many of my fellow firefighters, support Tom in his run for first selectman and believe he has the honesty, good judgment and concern for residents to make him a great leader.

Tom is committed to preserving all that is good about Middlebury, and with Elaine M.R. Strobel, will continue to provide for our needs in a fiscally responsible manner. A vote in Tuesday's Republican primary for these two longtime residents is a vote for the future of our town.

No problem, Time Machine. I've met Gormely many times and I'm tired of him being made into a bad guy. And Paul, well Paul has been there for me for a long time. While everyone else I went to High School with was getting high or partying - I was down at the FD polishing engines, scrubbing the floors, and learning skills that would enable me to help others while I helped myself. He helped me get a scholarship to college, and he even gave me rides to the fire department before I got my license. He selflessly gave countless hours to just me, and I was just one of his firefighters... there were many more. He's a good father, a good leader, a good chief, a good role model, and a good man. Give me the credit he deserves.

Hate to tell you this, my frend, but Waterbury is certainly NOT drooling over our equipment. The oldest piece in their front-line fleet is Engine 7, a 1995 Seagrave pumper. Middlebury has only one piece newer than that, Truck 1, a2000 LTI Ladder. If you truly believe they are salivating over a 1981 American La France, then that is a true indicator of your ignorance. In fact, there aren't many departments anywhere that would be salivating over the MVFD fleet. No one is looking for "full-time " work as a Middlebury firefighter. We like volunteering. We'd just prefer not to be responding in vehicles that are older than some of the members.

I'd rather be a 'pretend' fireman than a for real douche bag...

I just had another brainstorm. Even better than my last idea. Here it is:

MVFD creates a "Antique Fire Engine Museum" just like the Golden Age of Trucking Museum. Right there on Tucker Hill Road. Just tweak the sign. Not hard to get antiques since most of our equipment there is more than 25 years old. That's a lot of antique fire engines. I think there are other old engines up in rural Maine we can get to help fill in a few gaps.

Charge the visitors to see the antiques.

Everybody wins. Well maybe not if you want to actually fight fires, but if you like antiques - great!
